Saara Chaudry
For my calligram, I chose to indulge myself in trying something new by experimenting with stylized Islamic calligraphy. I wrote the word ‘alhamdulillah’ in Arabic– a phrase used to express gratitude. It is translated to ‘praise/thanks be to God’ in English. In my painting, I highlighted two of, what I consider to be, the most striking concepts in Islam.
The reminder to thank Allah, and display gratitude for his endless mercy and blessings, is constant throughout the Quran. The notion of gratitude is integral in Islam, so much so that the Quran says, “Does not God know best who are the grateful ones? (6:53), implying that those who are grateful are in closest proximity to Allah. Not only does gratitude allow you to become more connected to God, but modern science suggests that gratitude can be the top determinant of one’s happiness. The compatibility of modern science and Islam fascinates me. Current psychology research suggests that gratitude is remarkably helpful in feeling more positive emotions, increasing physical health, increasing satisfaction in relationships, and our ability to effectively deal with all of life’s adversities (Harvard Medical School).
In addition to highlighting the importance of gratitude in Islam, I wanted to showcase the concept of ‘noor’ in my painting through the use of sparkly black paint. Whether the word ‘noor’ is used in the context of calling Allah by one of his 99 names (An-Nur; the light, the illuminator) or when fellow Muslims use it as an adjective to describe their most beloved companions, I have always found ‘noor’ to be one of the most beautiful notions in Islam. Hearing that you have ‘noor’ on your face, or that you bring ‘noor’ into another human being's life, is one of the highest compliments I believe a Muslim can receive.
