Resources for Loss

"Why" by Rascal Flatts, contributed by Audrey Yang (2025)

“Why” is a song released in 2009 sung from the perspective of someone who lost their friend to suicide and is grappling with feelings of guilt and denial as they process their grief. The band members of Rascal Flatts had all known someone who had died by suicide, making the song production very personal. The repetition of the chorus shows the cyclical nature of processing grief, and how they are racked by guilt from not knowing about their friend’s pain. However, the final iteration of the chorus changes lyrics from “that’s what I keep asking” to “there’s no comprehending,” suggesting a progression towards acceptance and relieving themselves of the guilt they feel. The use of a song as a metaphor for the person’s life is present in the lyrics but is also reflective of how this particular song represents the life of the deceased – the final two lines seem to extend the song beyond a natural ending, indicating how letting the song end is the ultimate acceptance of their loss, which is why they are so reluctant to let the song end. The song resonates deeply not only with people who have lost close friends to suicide, but also with people who may be struggling with suicidal thoughts themselves, by conveying the value of every person’s life. Thus, the creation of such a song is a beautiful way of making meaning for the band members by moving beyond the loss to help the people they still can.

[Verse 1]
You must have been in a
Place so dark
You couldn't feel the light
Reachin' for you through
That stormy cloud
Now here we are
Gathered in our little hometown
This can't be the way
You meant to draw a crowd

[Chorus]
Oh why, that's what I keep asking
Was there anything I could've
Said or done
Oh, I had no clue you were masking
A troubled soul, God only knows
What went wrong and why
You would leave the stage
In the middle of a song

[Verse 2]
Now in my mind I'll keep you frozen
As a seventeen-year-old
Rounding third to score the winning run
You always played with passion
No matter what the game
When you took the stage
You'd shine just like the sun

[Chorus]
Oh why, that's what I keep asking
Was there anything I could've
Said or done
Oh, I had no clue you were masking
A troubled soul, , God only knows
What went wrong and why
You would leave the stage
In the middle of a song

[Bridge]
Now the oak trees are swaying
In the early autumn breeze
A golden sun is shining on my face
Through tangled thoughts
I hear a mockingbird sing
This old world really ain't that
Bad of a place

[Chorus]
Oh why, there's no comprehending
And who am I to try to judge or explain
Oh, but I do have one burning question
Who told you life wasn't worth the fight
They were wrong, they lied
Now you're gone and we cry
Cause it's not like you to walk away
In the middle of a song

[Outro]
Your beautiful song
Your absolutely beautiful song
