“St. Peter’s Autograph” by Jason Isabell, contributed by Sidney Regelbrugge (2025)
“St. Peter’s Autograph” is performed by Jason Isabell and 400 Unit. It is a song that appears to be conceived as a man speaking to his wife after the passing of her friend; it is uncertain under what condition he passed. The husband is attempting to console his wife by asking what he can do to ease her pain. At one point, he even asks, “Get St. Peter’s Autograph.” St. Peter is a Patron Saint in the Christian Church. The husband continues to comfort his wife, alluding to the idea that her friend had “somewhere else to be,” and maintaining that he is not “haunted” by the friend’s ghost. The man wants to comfort his wife so that she knows that her grief can continue for however long it must and that he would do anything to ease some of her pain. It is a beautiful sentiment regarding a man helping his other half through a loss that has torn through her. It reflects the human desire to make it all better.
