Resources for Loss

Four poems from The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien, contributed by Ben Porteous (2019)

I have selected four poems from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings.  The poems appear to capture Tolkien’s remarkable gift for the nobly elegiac.  They tell not of the death of a person, but of the loss of culture, heritage, the pain of us who toil here, and remember the glories and joys of the days that will never return, the days that have “vanished under cover of night,/ As though they never were.”

One stanza gives the mood well “O Elbereth! Gilthoniel!/ We still remember, we who dwell/ In this far land beneath the trees,/ Thy starlight on the Western Seas.”
