Resources for Loss

“Funeral Blues” by W.H. Auden, contributed by Eliot Cowan (2022)

The link includes an audio recording of the poem said aloud, which I think adds to the meaning.

The poem above may provide someone who is grieving with a sense of solidarity, understanding, and comfort. Through its poignant imagery, the poem speaks to the overwhelming grief associated with loss and the finality of death. It conveys the idea that, while death may be the end of a person's physical life, the memories and love that they leave behind will live on forever. The line “I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong” is relatable in many circumstances of loss, hopefully allowing the griever to feel less alone during a time when they must be feeling very isolated.
