Note to users: These documents form one part of a larger set of documents designed to train historians in the use of a wide range of Ming and Qing documents. By grouping documents around a single historical case, the Zhong Renjie syllabus is intended to move the user efficiently through the early stages of reading documents by taking advantage of a limited vocabulary and context. By introducing a variety of historical sources, we hope to demonstrate the benefits of approaching a case from various angles. Reference notes have been kept to the minimum necessary for efficient use of these materials. The second part of the syllabus, entitled "Using Archives", includes a broader sample of materials that are not related to each other in subject. The goal is to help students gain familiarity with the nature, use, and retrieval of many kinds of late imperial primary sources.
