"Three Magical Phrases To Comfort A Dying Person" by Jenny Harrington Lill, contributed by Eshan Vishwakarma (2025)

I had stage three Neuroblastoma when I was four. I appreciated this story as a cancer survivor because I’ve lost so many close friends to the disease. I chose this essay, in particular, because it speaks of the unspeakable—the act of saying goodbye, the deep helplessness that comes with watching a loved one slip away, and the quiet strength in being present when words fail us. The “three magic phrases”—you will not be alone, you will not feel pain, we will be okay—struck a chord with me not only as someone who has sat beside dying friends, but as someone who has wondered what I would want to hear if it were me. This article made me think about the possibility of finding comfort, even in death, and the preciousness of the love we share in those few moments.
