Włocławek
It was founded in the 11th century and destroyed not once, but twice, by the Teutonic Knights. There is a Gothic cathedral that dates to 1365, an episcopal palace, and a Lutheran church to round things out.
Best of all, just over 8 miles to the west there is a more romantic landscape. The former capital of Kujavia, Brześć Kujawski, is a showdow of what it once was, with just a few thousand souls, a 13th century church, and the ruins of walls and ramparts and moats.
There it is.
The ruins of walls and ramparts and moats.
I have been scouring Baedeker for just such places and dog-earing the pages that contain them.
