The Imperiia Project: a spatial history of the Russian Empire

Tolgski Monastery

Here I saw a phoenix-monastery.

I like my term. Deliciously irreverent.

It refers, of course, to a monastery that rose from the ashes of its former self. In this case, it was born in 1314 and rose from the ashes of destruction at the hands of the Poles in 1609.

Such is the common glory of sacred ruins.
