The Imperiia Project: a spatial history of the Russian Empire

There be Dragons

At first glance, this might appear to be just another rigorous, scientific study. And yes, it was published by the Pacific branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

But venture a second glance. Astronomical readings, geological information, pictorial elements, statistics, watershed designations, relief - all of it comes together to document a space that is anything but measured and orderly. This is a land of smoking peaks and quaking coasts. It is dangerous and unpredictable and beautiful. The dragons are here, on this map, shown in profile. As if by sketching and numbering them they might be controlled.
