The Imperiia Project: a spatial history of the Russian Empire

Rabotki

I have been looking forward to this stage of the voyage ever since reading Baedeker's description of it on page 348 (which I must have done months ago, but had forgotten until after dinner two nights ago).

The towns and villages arrest our attention through the charm of their colouring. The houses and the church cupolas are painted in gay tints, and form a striking contrast to the green trees and the white sandy banks. Monotonous marshy plains or sombre woods of pine and fir are followed by groves of limes and oaks, green meadows, and smiling fields, while these in turn give place to the endless steppes of the south.

They are right. Life on the river banks looks to be worth living.
