The Imperiia Project: a spatial history of the Russian Empire

Włocławek

Włocławek boasts three hotels: the Three Crowns, the Old Market, and the Mazowiecki.

Were I to say that this is a district capital and industrial town with 37,000 inhabitants, your eyes might glaze over. So I will note instead that it was founded in the 11th century only to be destroyed twice by the Teutonic Knights. There is a Gothic cathedral that dates to 1365, an episcopal palace, and a Lutheran church (to balance things out a bit, I'm sure).

Just over 8 miles to the west there is a bit of romance to the landscape. The former capital of Kujavia, Brześć Kujawski, is much diminished from what it was in its glory days, with just a few thousand souls remaining, and a 13th century church, and the ruins of walls and ramparts and moats.

It is the ruins of walls and ramparts and moats that caught my attention. I have been scouring Baedeker for just such places and dog-earing the pages that contain them.
