Black Radicalism

“The Day of the Killer Tornados”

“The Day of the Killer Tornados” is a 1977 documentary presented by the United States Civil Defense Preparedness Agency as a way of documenting both the day that nearly 150 tornados touched down in the US as well as the warning systems that the National Weather Service uses in the event of a tornado. At first it was unclear as to why this film was included in Harvard University’s James E. Hinton archive collection, as there was not a single Black person shown in the film until 17 minutes in, mostly seen in the form of nurses and firefighters. The film mostly interviewed white victims, with the exception of one group of Black men. An interesting point that could be interpreted from the film was that northern (whiter) cities, like Cincinnati, had better warning systems and fewer deaths, whereas the southern (and therefore Blacker) cities had a less advanced infrastructure and therefore greater deaths.
