Black Radicalism

From Academia to Action: The History of Black Student Organizing and Protest on Harvard's Campus

Throughout the semester, our class been in constant conversation about the role of intellectuals and elites in radical movements. It has prompted us to think about the history of student activism at elite institutions, particularly here at Harvard. Our project, a collection of images, articles, and other files from the records of the Association of African and Afro-American Students at Harvard and Radcliffe, provides unique insight into Black student organizing and the experiences of Black students on this campus. From inviting prominent Black intellectuals to speak on campus, organizing hunger strikes to aid African countries, to writing guides to help Black applicants gain entrance into Harvard, these records have given us new perspective through which to view the complex experiences and determined activism of Black students at Harvard.
