Black Radicalism

An Introduction by Audre Lorde

My artifact is a draft introduction to Pat Parker's collection of poetry, written by her close friend Audre Lorde. In the introduction, Lorde discusses the heterosexism and racism in the field of poetry, and how Parker's work shines in spite of this. This object teaches us of the resilience of black women within the black activist community in the twentieth century, and the solidarity which was necessary, between these women, in order to survive. The discrimination which Lorde describes within the poetry field is something which would have been replicated within the movement, and speaks volumes of the multifaceted oppression black, lesbian women faced. The defiant ending of the introduction depicts the determination of black women in these movements to not be silenced, but instead recognised and celebrated for their efforts. To be a radical female was to fight tirelessly for the movement's cause, but also the oppression faced within that movement, from your sexist (or in this case possibly homophobic/heterosexist) male and female counterparts.
