My name is Gayoung and I am a sophomore in Quincy House studying Sociology. I currently serve on the board for the Small Claims Advisory Service as one of two Membership Engagement Directors.
I comped SCAS in the fall of my freshman year, and served on the board as social chair for two semesters beginning in the spring of freshman year. When my term on SCAS board as social chair was coming to a close, I decided on a whim to run for one of the two positions of executive director, the highest position within the organization. I wasn’t able to win the election, but I still decided to run for another position on SCAS board. Board positions are obtained based on interviews with the newly-elected executive directors, and I was assigned to my second choice for board position, social chair. The executive directors had appreciated the work I had been doing for SCAS as the social chair and believed that I would be able to lead this position to fulfill even greater potential. This is how I became the SCAS social chair for another year.
Recently, SCAS moved to rename the position of social chair to Membership Engagement. I believe that this title reflects more properly what we do-- we not only organize events, but we think of different ways to engage our members through community initiatives.
In addition to serving on board for SCAS, I am a research partner at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies. I also serve as the Finance Chair for the Harvard Korean Association and currently do research with the Korea Project at Harvard Kennedy School of Government. When I'm not in class or attending meetings, I love to play the violin and perform Mexican folk music with Mariachi Veritas de Harvard or sing and rap in musicals. I hope to attend law school one day and establish a career in advocacy and public service in the future.
