Students in Service and Leadership at Harvard

Volume 3: 2020 Student Projects

This was the third installation of the SOCIOL1130 yet the class took unprecedented line of action due to COVID-19. Our class met on Mondays for two one hour section and on Wednesday for 2 hours 45 minutes session in the Innovation Space in the Stone Hall of Quincy House. We had Dean Rakesh Khurana and Dean O'Dair join us as guest speakers in February. And the SOCH team of the Office of Student Life  conducted a focus group session with the class gathering input on the support to student organizations and student leadership development framework.

Our last residential session was on Wednesday, March 11 2020 when we were in the Learning Lab with Marlon Kuzmick who conducted a workshop on capturing multimedia for action research and digital essays in Scalar. Jeremy Guillette from the Academic Technology Group joined us for an introductory session to Scalar. The Scrabble image was developed by students as part of workshop activities.

In March, after the Spring Break, teaching and learning at Harvard moved to remote work through Zoom. And student organizations and many of the service roles students in this class have been engaged in remote operations. We started our first session with a guest talk "Doing Well by Being Well" by Tara Cousineau, PhD, Staff Psychologist at Harvard University Counseling and Mental Health Services and author of the "The Kindness Cure: How the Science of Compassion Can Heal Your Heart and Your World". We also had conversation with Lynn C. Fitzgerald, , Executive Assistant to the Danoff Dean of Harvard College and Adrienne Jackson, Administrative Coordinator about behind the scenes of Ofice of Danoff Dean of Harvard College. Finally, Kate Johnson, Deputy Director of the PBHA ran a student leadership workshop on recruiting, retaining members and community building in student organizations.

In the review session, student teaching teams presented key take-aways from the course modules.

Students presented their action research project on the last day of classes. Presentations were attended and discussed by Rakesh Khurana, Katie O'Dair, Kate Colleran, Flavia Perea and Jason Backfield.
