The Educational Studies Secondary was created as a stand-alone secondary in the Fall of 2018, not run through the FAS like most other departments, rather through the Graduate School of Education. In that Fall, Professor Julie Reuben (the Faculty Director for the Ed Secondary) created the Student Advisory Council as a way to keep connected with the student body as the Ed Secondary was getting off the ground. In my interview with Professor Reuben, we discussed the initial goals of the Ed SAC as to do the following:
Advise the Ed Secondary administrators (her and at the time, Matt Tallon, the administrative coordinator for the program)
Spread the word of the existence of the Ed Secondary to the student population
Build community within those interested in declaring the Ed Secondary
Expand the understanding of what “going into education” means to students at the College from just being becoming a teacher
That semester, she recruited students from the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes, specifically picking people who were integral to the actual creation of the Ed Secondary in the prior years. The Ed SAC has since stayed active to date, not only as an advisory board to Ed Secondary admin, but effectively as a community building student organization designed to inspire members of the Ed Secondary to stay connected with each other.
