Students in Service and Leadership at Harvard

Chelsea's recommendations for DSO/SOCH

The infographic above summarizes the conclusions from this project's findings, and this is part of what I would like to present to members of the DSO and the SOCH (most likely, Lauren Brandt and JR Bagley, who oversee the Houses/tutors and student organization resources respectively). These recommendations are intended to be clear, actionable, and applicable steps for all student organizations, especially younger student organizations that are still undergoing many structural and ideological shifts, to develop their communities productively based on the experience and expertise of their peers.

Every student organization is different, and I realize that the findings of this project are unable to be personally tailored to the needs of every group. However, the purpose of the DSO and the SOCH, especially the mandatory Leadership Training Forum that happens every fall and spring semester, should be to create personalized success frameworks and timelines for student organizations as they progress at Harvard. I strongly believe that the Leadership Training Forum and the existing requirements to become and remain a student organization are not sufficient in addressing many of the leadership success and succession concerns that were brought up by my respondents. I hope that their thoughtful answers can lead to actionable changes that will help leaders and organizations at Harvard in the near future.
