Students in Service and Leadership at Harvard

Breaking New Ground Requires New Tools

The mission of FOP is one of careful navigation. Trips succeed when participants and leaders are vulnerable, and the outdoors and Harvard both offer a certain level of risk, physical and emotional. It should come as no surprise, then, that this milieu offers a set of perennial challenges for members of both Steering Committee and the greater Leader Community (LC).

It is becoming abundantly evident that our Steering Committee faces an information gap. Though we hope to make informed and useful decisions for the program, we in our current form do not collect enough data to know if these are actions that would be well received until after we implement them.

My research question, then, is as follows: How can we more effectively measure student expectations and experience on preorientation, and how can we use this information to tailor our programs to participants?
