This image depicts the decisive moment in the 1854-1855 Siege of Sevastopol. It shows the French zouaves seizing control of the Malakoff Redoubt on September 8th, 1855. The loss of this vital element of Sevastopol's defenses forced the Russian troops to withdraw three days later.
