The Free Breakfast
This exhibit displays a digital black and white image of a poster promoting an event being thrown by the Black Panther Party where children can be served free breakfast. It contains information about what assets still needed to be donated to make it happen, and locations for the free breakfasts to take place. Also seen on the poster include a memo including where the Black Panther Party's headquarters were going to move, information on contacting the Panthers, and the mantras they used. This poster shows as an example that the Panthers were not all about violence and carrying guns all the time -- they also put on events to look out for the young ones of the community. This is a fact that is often overlooked since the government painted the Panthers as violent terrorists rather than what they truly were. The existence of this piece is a callback to the works of people whose thoughts helped to form organizations like the Black Panther Party, such as George Jackson with his massively impactful addition to the Black radical canon Soledad Brother. It's an example of the type of solidarity that Jackson would agree Black people needed to have for each other. The communism that was essential to Jackson's radicalism shows itself in the fact that the Panthers expect the community to donate to the cause. Hopefully, upon seeing an exhibit such as this one, viewers will be exposed to the hidden benevolence of the Panthers.
