Working Women of the East: A digital resource for exploring the Soviet Union through the lives of women on its periphery

Introduction

Welcome to Working Women of the East!

We are a digital resource project that empowers students and researchers to make new discoveries about the Soviet Union through the lens of the 1927-1928 pamphlet series Truzhenitsa Vostoka (Working Women of the East). A near-complete set of the pamphlet series is housed at Houghton Library, Harvard University's central rare book and manuscript repository.

This site was created by Christine Jacobson, Assistant Curator of Modern Books and Manuscripts, with support from Harvard Imaging, Houghton Library's Technical Services department, and the Harvard Office for Academic Technology.

This resource is designed to foster independent discovery while also supporting teaching and learning outcomes.

We approach the resources presented here as part of the historical record—but is it the whole story? How did the Soviets tell the story of these women? What stories will you tell?
