Meditation on Prayer by Salaidh Perez (2025)

I’m Catholic, so I spent a lot of time at church with my family following the death of my grandma on March 4, 2019. On one particularly hard day, I asked our priest how one could get closer to God, as up until that point I was more of a “Sunday Catholic.” He told me the best way to do so was to just have a conversation with Him the way you would do with anyone else, telling Him about your day and everything you experienced/felt. From then on, every night as I lay in bed before falling asleep, I would take 5–10 minutes to talk to Him and tell him about everything that had happened that day. What really helped me was making a point to make a list every night of 5 to 10 things (depending on how I was feeling) that had made me happy/smile/laugh that day (essentially anything positive that had happened). In such a dark time in my life, this really helped me remember that no matter how bleak life may look, there are always good things to be thankful for. Besides strengthening my relationship with God and reminding me that I am never alone, this really helped me find the joy in life’s small things and remember that there is always a reason to smile.
