Were some factories more productive than others?
Without a doubt. Though it depends on how you measure.
Use the bookmark icon (upper right) to zoom into the major cities. Use the export icon (upper left) to save any map view you like as a pdf.
What does this map tell us?
First, for every factory it shows the % of the total value (in rubles) of all confection production listed in the 1887. The larger the dark orange dot, the greater the % of confection production. The map also shows you the productivity of each factory measures as rubles per worker. The larger the light orange square, the greater the production value (measured in rubles) per worker. Be careful. The data in the Index is incomplete. Be sure to inspect the popup windows to find out how much we know about each factory.
There are 2 bonus layers. Click the layer icon to toggle on the steam power layer. All factories that used steam-powered machines to produce candy, chocolate, or confection, will light up. And/or toggle on the merchants as % population layer to add some suggestive contextual information.
