Catherine sends Dr. Johann Lerche to the front

Lerche was a native of Potsdam and a veteran of the plague of 1738-1739. Since 1763 he had served as city-physician of St. Petersburg (the very one whom Crutta had been appointed to support. [107]

Lerche found minimal illness at Bender and went on to Jassy, where over 1,000 had died. He continued to travel the front through the warm and wet summer, before heading north toward Kiev in early October.
