It addresses the intrusive thoughts that one has when thinking about the inevitable death of loved ones. It is not the most comforting piece in and of itself, but it can make someone feel less alone when navigating the angrier, self-doubting side of grief.
To me this piece on first read made me feel quite sad; however, reading it again and again helps me feel less alone in the darker parts of loss. Aciman’s is a perspective not frequently voiced on loss and intrusive thoughts regarding it. It’s refreshing to see something like this unashamedly published.
