The Imperiia Project: a spatial history of the Russian Empire

The battle against disease

Postnikov was determined to find a treatment - if not a cure - for tuberculosis, which ravaged the region throughout the second half of the 19th century. He pioneered his kumiss cure with the help of Bashkirs and the support of the provincial governor, who allocated land for cottages and pasture.

The cure was pricey (and involved visits to the banya, strolling the grounds, and an exercise regime) and available only to the middle and upper classes - as many as 250 per year - but its virtues were extolled by the nobility and won acclaim from Moscow to Paris.
