Here we see Maksimovich offering the toponym Assak Dengis. This is close, but no proverbial cigar. The Ottomans called the sea Azak Deniz (deniz is the Turkish word for "sea").

Because of the rivers emptying into it, the Azov is difficult for ships to navigate.
