Russian transliteration of Turkish terms were not always accurate and even the most learned men often passed an error down from one text to another. Here we see Maksimovich offering the toponym Assak Dengis. This is close, but no proverbial cigar. The Ottomans called the sea Azak Deniz (deniz is the Turkish word for "sea").
