Students in Service and Leadership at Harvard

My Journey to Student Life

I joined the Office of Student Involvement in my senior year after being involved with the Student Organization Center at Hilles for a year. Currently, I hold both intern positions and it has been helpful to understand the efforts that the College has made in order to grow and enhance student life. As a student who has seen student life from the viewpoint of a student organization leader - through the Black Men’s Forum and the Black Students Association - I have seen how easy it is to become frustrated with student life at Harvard even if I do not fully understand the moves that the Office of Student Life is trying to make.

My official title in both the Office of Student Involvement and the SOCH is office programming assistant, which was recently changed from the title office intern this past fall. From my understanding, this name change was an effort to emphasize the changing role of students in planning and holding student life programming that would enhance the College experience. My responsibilities in this office role includes performed a variety of administrative tasks in the offices of the Associate Dean of Student Engagement and the Manager of the SOCH, including answering the phone, responding to emails, and liaising with student organization leaders. Office programming assistants also work independently to manage individually assigned projects, mentor peers, and create marketing materials.

Student life at Harvard College interests me because of its importance to my growth, development, and experience at a college student. Student life introduced me to and played a role in shaping the relationships that I have garnered here. In my view, student life must be a central part of a student's day-to-day endeavors.
