CAIR Conference 2018
Providing a Platform for the Different Faces of Migration
On of the most recent and time-intensive projects that Act on a Dream has been working on and ultimately completed was the CAIR Conference.The 8th annual Collegiate Alliance for Immigration Reform (CAIR) Conference was held at Harvard College on February 24th-25th, 2018. This two-day event was planned by Act on a Dream and their extension CAIR Board with the goal of bringing together college students, organizations, activists, scholars, and other members of the national pro-immigrant rights community to rally, share strategies, and empower ourselves in our fight to achieving comprehensive and humanitarian immigration reform and extending immigrant rights in the United States.
We sought to foster a crucial opportunity for national members of this network to share knowledge and experience through the following four approaches:
- Engaging in critical discussions about the immigrant identity;
- Exploring the complexity of immigrant narratives here in the United States that prioritizes the inclusion of Black, African diaspora, Asian Pacific Islander, Trans and Queer, laborer and differently-abled identities;
- Continuing the work of the previous conferences to build coalitions among our immigrant communities to strategize and strengthen our activism within the pro-immigrant movement;
- Share goals, resources, and courses of action to make institutions of higher education more aware about the concerns of undocumented, DACA, and mixed status scholars.
Why CAIR?
Act on a Dream of Harvard College firmly believes that immigrants hold a wealth of knowledge, experience, expertise, potential, and skills that can benefit the larger community. We aim to harness this growing constituency to advocate for human rights, humane immigration reform, and social justice.This conference is a continuation of the ongoing advocacy work Act on a Dream has worked on through community education, awareness programs, and activism. We do this through outreach to communities within and outside Harvard, community building, advocacy, and media relations. Act on a Dream works to dispel myths surrounding immigration in the United States.
Not enough progress has been made at the local and national level, and undocumented students and their families continue to have low access to education, jobs, and other opportunities. For this reason, the CAIR Conference is a crucial event for building relationships, empowering undocumented individuals and raising awareness to further a greater goal.
CAIR is our way of reaffirming our commitment to immigration reform and immigrants’ rights.
