Verse 1 and the refrain "It is well..." take about 1 min. 11/12 seconds and, I think, show the power of the song. Any time I hear this hymn I find tears come and run down my face -- occasionally with no kleenex to be found. I have wondered why a piece of music that brings tears can somehow give comfort. My current thought is that the words and music express the universality of sorrows in life, and the refrain resolves that recognition into an assurance of healing.
