The Imperiia Project: a spatial history of the Russian Empire

The Chorographic Sketchbook

The Chorographic sketchbook (Khorograficheskaia kniga) is the work of Semyon Remezov. It consists of 172 folio sheets that represent Siberia, in gorgeous graphic language, at the end of the 17th century. Each sheet is 30 x 195 cm.

The sketchbook, or atlas, occupies a pivotal place in the history of Russian cartography: Remezov executed the atlas according to the traditional Russian method of mapping land by mapping the rivers that course through it. The monuments of Russian cartography that followed, all produced by the Imperial Academy of Science, would be executed in the western manner.
