The Imperiia Project: a spatial history of the Russian Empire

General Government of Warsaw (section I)

The office of the general-governor of Warsaw was created in January 1874. Between 1815 and 1874, the territory was known as the Kingdom of Poland - a partially autonomous area of the Russian Empire. The change in status was a downgrade (in terms of autonomy) and a step closer toward full integration into the imperial state.
