A tree with beautiful large leaves on par with those of the walnut. "According to travel accounts, in America they make a paste of the fruit (постила); they also distill a kind of vodka."

The Tatars claim not to know where the tree came from, but it seems to have come from Anatolia or from Persia, where "wild dates" are common. (see page 78-79)
