In 1895 the Department of Agriculture published a map of fruit production in European Russia and the Caucasus. Here it is, chock-full of juicy layers of data.

Fair warning though: This is a typical 19th-century thematic map. The symbolization scheme is complex, using color, line, and symbol to communicate three sets of observations: the level of development of the industry, the distribution of fruits, and the location of related educational institutions. It takes work to unpack the insights.
